Skill Level: Beginner. To complete the pattern, you need to be able to sew a 1/4” seam and perform basic hand sewing.
Required Supplies
Beak:
□ ONE 1”x1” square of non-fray material (felt, leather, etc.).
Eyes:
□ For pincushion: TWO black beads or buttons (1/4” diameter or smaller). We used size 2/0 (6mm) Czech seed beads.
□ For cat toy: TWO black felt circles with a ¼” diameter. By not using beads or buttons, you’ll eliminate the possibility of your kitty ripping off the eyes and creating a choking hazard.
Main Body Fabric:
□ 1/8 yard of your desired fabric. If using scraps, you need TWO 5”x5” squares of scrap fabric. Suggested fabrics: flannel, quilting cotton, canvas, or linen. If making a cat toy with quilting cotton, consider backing the fabric with a lightweight fusible interfacing to increase its durability.
Wings/Tail
Choose one:
□ If making the wings and tail from a non-fray fabric like leather, felt, or fleece, use ONE 5”x5” scrap.
□ If making the wings and tail from a frayable fabric like flannel or quilting cotton, use ONE Fat 1/8th (9”x22”), or a standard 1/8th yard (4.5”x44”). If using scraps, find enough scrap material for 4 wing pieces and 2 tail pieces.
Filling
□ For pincushion and cat toy: Poly-Fil stuffing, or batting scraps
□ For pincushion only: Crushed walnut shells, poly pellets, or other weighted granular fill to weigh down the pincushion.
Notions:
□ Hand sewing needle.
□ Machine sewing threads that match your wings and main body fabric.
□ Black hand sewing thread for attaching eyes.
□ Pins or quilt clips.
□ Permanent fabric glue (if making a pouch to contain catnip or messy weighted fill materials).
